The Iconic Game Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Between Rock Generations

Marking two decades after the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the opportunity to become a rock star. Not in reality, but try convincing someone who has nailed Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues scrolling down the display in time with a song. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, creating the feel of an authentic performance.

Harmonix previously tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, later purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar franchise that had a remarkable influence for many of the artists included, showcasing classic bands to a new generation of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the early financial challenges of licensing the recordings – even though the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced all the music because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like the Who – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. But once the game took off, and record sales airtime were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He adds: “Among the amazing things was the number of parents got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds a New Audience

Northern Irish blues-rock band the Answer had Never Too Late on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist recalls the way the game revived older hits to the forefront: “The game offered a larger, younger audience. Generally such music was seen as outdated material, however when it was featured on the game and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised it, and got rid of the outdated label. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album was still not available in the US, so the game was a key medium for exposure for the group as they went on US tour opening for AC/DC. “Their crew had on the song on the tour bus, and several recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Rock’s biggest acts soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in dedicated game editions centered around each band’s catalogue and related stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It sold more than half a million copies in its first week, while sales of Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with similar gameplay but an array of personalization features. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, not to mention performed at increased tempo and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated it took months of practice to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, fantasy thing. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up actual weapons and go to war,” notes musician the artist.

The band had already wrapped up a successful tour when their hit was featured in the third game, but Li says it made them a household name. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that we were selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it has risked eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Last year, the song was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “If you only listen to a single track, it’s totally cool – each person has their own path in music and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Plastic Guitar

The best promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, goes further mere transactions – it evokes a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a music icon on the stage. Since the beginning, the creators believed there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

The majority installments were released over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including spin-offs such as DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus on peripherals died down, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Titles like Clone Hero and newer releases have maintained the scene alive, and there’s expectations of something from the original publisher in development. A new studio has entered work on its debut music game. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace another game following the classic?

“We thought such titles could be like Madden where you can releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks that it could be perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
