Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about classified information in all cars.

Safety Advice for Defence Staff

During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Background

The announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This wider defence situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of government operations, from transport use to discussions practices.
