Jair Bolsonaro taken into custody after being declared a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
