At least 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
